Saliva Beautifies Skin. Regular Swallowing of It Leads to Longevity
"Sufficient water from the tongue (saliva)" is like ganoderma which can beautify skin and extend the life expectancy. 
Saliva was known in ancient times as "Jinjinyuye" and "Huachishengshui (both mean magic water). Ganoderma, also known as "immortal grass", is a kind of fungi with functions to beautify skin and prolong life. Thus, its Chinese name is "Lingzhi", which means magic fungi. Saliva is compared to ganoderma, which highlights its importance on the human body. As for saliva, there is a funny story.
One day during the Three Kingdoms era, Cao Cao asked Huangpu Long, his subordinate, for advice on how to stay healthy and live a long life. Huangpu Long, more than one hundred years old then, was energetic and radiant. Therefore, he was called "god" at that time. Cao Cao said respectfully, "You are over one hundred years old and are still so healthy and happy. It's a good thing for us. I heard that you have a secret recipe to stay healthy and young. Can you write it down for me?"
While taking down the recipe, Huangpu Long said, "There are ways for staying healthy and young and they are simple but hard to carry out. It means that although there are some simple and easy ways to stay healthy and young in daily life, it's hard for people to carry them on. Then, Huangpu Long handed the slip of paper to Cao Cao. The latter unfolded it and found only one word on it, "活" (live) .
Cao Cao laughed and asked, "what does "活" mean?" Huangpu Long explained, "the character '活' consists of two affixes, one ‘氵' (water) and the other ’舌' (tongue) ."It means that water from the tongue (saliva) forms the character “live". To live and to live a long life, we need saliva. And we need swallow saliva regularly. This way is called "Yinyuquan" (swallow saliva) . Saliva is to the body what spring is to a mountain. Spring brings vitality to mountains. Sufficient saliva circulates in the body, facilitating the generation of blood, improving eyesight, nourishing spirit, improving the respiratory system and the reproductive system. After hearing this, Cao Cao couldn't help nodding.
 
A Time-honored Health-preserving Method 
After investigating those with a long life expectancy, it can be found that although they have different ways for health preserving; almost all of them have a common habit, swallowing saliva regularly.
Sun Simiao is a well-known herb expert in Tang Dynasty, known as”Herb King" and an old people over one hundred years old. He integrated different thoughts on health preserving, put forward his own theories, and practiced many health tips personally. In his book, Yang Sheng Ming (On Health Preserving), details of "Su Yujin" (cleanse the mouth cavity with saliva) were recorded: "Cleansing the mouth cavity with saliva in the morning can fend off disease and extend the life expectancy." Yujin refers to saliva. In doing this, you need to lick and grind the inside and outside gum with the tongue in different directions in the morning, and then swallow the secreted saliva. A long life will be realized by doing this regularly.
Sushi, one of the famous "the Eight Great Men of Letters in the Tang Dynasty and the Song Dynasty, is a well-known litterateur, calligrapher, painter, and expert on health preserving. After Sushi was demoted at the beginning of his career and then moved to and worked in Huangzhou (now Huanggang County, Hubei Province), he led a cozy life and composed many poems, such as Chibifu (Red Cliff Rhapsody), and Nian Nu Jiao·Memories of the Past at Red Cliff. He also cultivated a slope to plant crops with his family members to make both ends meet. It is this period when he got his alias, Dongpojushi (a person living on the Eastern Slope) . Based on his personal experience, Su Shi (a famous poet and writer in Song Dynasty) composed more than twenty articles on health preserving, including Wen Yang Sheng (Questions on Health Preserving) and Yang Sheng Shuo (On Health Preserving), all of which were included in Dong Po Yang Sheng Ji (Collection of Health Tips of Su Shi). He commented on his anthology, "If you gargle when getting up in the morning and swallow saliva, you will find that saliva is much more effective than medicine.
Emperor Qianlong is the emperor with the longest life expectancy throughout Chinese history. His reign lasted sixty years and he enjoyed a life expectancy of eighty-nine years. He lived through the period of Kangxi, Yongzhen, Qianlong, and Jiaqing. (All are in Qing Dynasty) Longevity of Emperor Qianlong has much to do with the ways of preserving health and keeping fit he practiced. Based on his personal experience, he summed up a formula for preserving health and keeping fit: inhalation and exhalation of the lung; move bones and tendons; 10 do’s and 4 don’ts; taking tonics at appropriate times. Among them, 10 do’s refers to knock teeth regularly, swallow saliva regularly, lift, press and pull ears regularly, massage the nose regularly, and turn the eyes regularly, massage the face regularly, massage the feet regularly, massage the abdomen regularly, stretch the limbs regularly, and lift the anus regularly. 4 don’ts refer to don't talk while eating, don't talk while sleeping, don't get drunk, don't indulge in sex. "Knock the teeth and swallow saliva" was ranked top of the health tips of the emperor with a long life expectancy.
China's knowledge of the health-preserving role of saliva is about one thousand years earlier than that of modern Western science. Based on the practice by the previous generations, usage of saliva and methods of swallowing saliva were summed up. Among them, the routines "Chilongjiaohai" (twist the tongue) and "Gusutunjin" (blow up the cheeks and swallow saliva) combine skin beautifying and health preserving. Both are easy, practical and convenient for practice.
 
How to do "Chilongjiaohai"(twist the tongue)  
The tongue is red and agile, thus compared to "chilong" (red dragon) . When twisting the tongue in the mouth cavity, which stimulates the salivary glands, it looks like a red dragon twisting in the sea of saliva. While practicing “chilongjiaohai”, close the lips, touch the gum with the tip of the tongue and turning the tongue in the counterclockwise direction for some times; Then, move the tongue outside the teeth, touch the gum with its tip and turn it in the counterclockwise direction for some times again. After that, do the same action in the clockwise direction for some times again.
It should be noted that the tongue should be moved evenly. During the teething phase of kids, their parents often warned them against licking the new teeth with the tongue; otherwise, they will have crooked teeth. The force of the tongue is not powerful, but its long-term action against the teeth equals to that of dripping water against stone. Regular licking and grinding will change the direction in which teeth grow. Therefore, while doing this routine, the movement of the tongue should be even.
 
How to practice "gusutunjin"(blow up the cheeks and swallow saliva)
While doing "gusutunjin", blow up the cheeks for dozens of times just as you are gargling. When blowing up the cheeks, you need to gargle rapidly, which will better stimulate the parotid gland and the muscles of cheeks. At the beginning of such practice, you will feel sore at the root of teeth and at cheeks. Add or reduce the frequency as you wish.
Twisting the tongue and blowing up the cheeks will lead to more and more saliva’s being secreted in the mouth. Don't swallow it down and keep it in the mouth. After the whole process, swallow it down in three installments and making noise at the same time, but not too violently.
 
Unique Role in Health Care 
To stay young. Saliva promotes digestion, diminishes inflammation, kills bacteria and enhances immune function. The most appealing material in saliva is parotin discovered in recent years. It was secreted by parotid gland and known to have rejuvenating effects among medical scientists. It can strengthen the vitality of muscles, blood vessels, teeth and connective tissues as well as the elasticity of blood vessels. In other words, sufficient parotin will maintain the elasticity of skin. From about the age of thirty, people's parotid gland begins to degenerate and parotin also decreases. The most effective and simple way to activate it is to stimulate cheeks. While practicing “chilongjiaohai”, the turning and twisting of the tongue and the blowing up of cheeks stimulate such major saliva-secreting organs as parotid gland, sublingual gland and sub-maxillary gland, thus promoting the generation of parotin.
To make women more pretty. What many women pay most attention to is how to beautify the facial skin. In fact, the most obvious characteristic of facial aging is the atrophy and slacking of facial muscles and the deepening of nasal groove. The more obvious the groove is, the more sagging the whole face will appear, and the more old one will look. To beautify the skin should start from inside. The more chubby cheeks are, the longer beauty will last. Facial fat and muscles grow relatively slower. To practice "chilongjiaohai" and "gusutunjin" is to exercise cheeks and beautify them. It is feasible and simple to beautify the skin but the key lies in persistence. In three months, you will find a different yourself in a mirror.
To prevent gingival atrophy. Many people suffer from toothache not due to the teeth but gingival atrophy. Gum refers to the muscular mucosa covering the tooth neck and contains many blood vessels and nerves. Gingival atrophy is common, which is mainly due to physiological decline of gingival muscles and periodontal disease. The less frequent use of muscles around the teeth will lead to atrophy of gingival muscles. Fine food will result in the drop of masticatory function. If a person is bedridden and seldom moves, the muscles of his limbs will shrink. Gingival atrophy needs medical treatment. What's more, gingival health care will also delay the shrink. In practicing “chilongjiaohai”, the turning and twisting of the tip of the tongue will massage and cleanse the gum, which will prevent gingival atrophy.
To stimulate channels and collaterals by twisting and turning the tongue. Zang-organs and fu-organs are connected to the tongue through channels and collaterals, for example, spleen channels, kidney channels and liver channels. The physiological change of zang-organs and fu-organs is also represented in the tongue. There is a "tongue diagnosis" approach in traditional Chinese medicine. After measuring your pulses, the doctor will ask you to stick out your tongue to judge the state of your body on the basis of state, shape, and color of the tongue. The tongue not only reflects whether your zang-organs and fu-organs are healthy but provide health-preserving for them. While practicing “chilongjiaohai”, the twisting and turning of the tongue in the mouth cavity will exercise the whole tongue and stimulate the connective channels and collaterals, thus achieving health-preserving function.
